Sgt Hatfield was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He died when hit by enemy fire while supporting combat operations. Jerome grew up in Pittsylvania County and graduated from Tunstall High School in Brosville, Virginia. Not long after graduation, he married his wife Angela and had three children. In June 1991, he decided to join the Marines and planned to make it his career. Jerome started his service as a drill instructor but then became the company operations chief for Delta Company in the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. He served in the Adriatic Sea in 1992 and 2000, Iraq in 2006 and 2008 and was deployed to Afghanistan in June 2009. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and many campaign, unit and service distinctions.
